The rollout of the GPT-5.1 update is underway, promising significant changes to how ChatGPT operates. Initially, people on paid plans will experience these new features. This update focuses on two main areas: enhancing the intelligence of the models and improving the quality of interactions. As the creators suggest, AI should not only be smart but also enjoyable to converse with. To achieve this, two updated models are being introduced: GPT-5.1 Instant and GPT-5.1 Thinking.
GPT 5.1 Instant: “warmer” and more obedient
The key change is the enhancement of two main models. The first one, GPT-5.1 Instant, is now designed to be “warmer” and more talkative by default. Instead of just delivering facts, it aims to surprise with a more natural and relaxed form. This is evident in the examples presented by OpenAI: when asked for relaxation techniques, the new model not only lists the methods but does so in a more empathetic and conversational way, grouping them by feelings (e.g., “if your mind feels scattered”), whereas the predecessor used to provide more general time-based categories.
