NotebookLM: a multimodal AI tool for learning

This text is part of the AI-ready University series. This time, I’m discussing a Google solution for both teachers and students.

Have you ever felt overwhelmed by the sheer number of notes, documents and recordings you’ve collected for study, not knowing where to start? Are you a teacher trying to pick the tastiest bits from an endless tangle of sources for your students? If so, you definitely need to check out NotebookLM.

This tool can become your personal study-buddy but also help generate interesting materials for class. What sets it apart from other tools of its kind is that instead of searching the entire internet, it only works on the documents you provide, which makes its responses more precise and expert.

What are its key features?

  • Information synthesis: it can quickly analyze notes, book scans or other materials and then summarize them, find key concepts and merge information from different documents to create a cohesive whole.
  • Sketch creation: based on the materials you provide, it can generate an article outline, questions or a summary in the form of a podcast or video.
  • Virtual conversations: With NotebookLM, you can chat like you’re talking to an expert in the field you’ve trained it in (by feeding it the right materials).

How can NotebookLM support content creation?

Instead of manually browsing through hundreds of pages of notes to find extra inspiration, ask NotebookLM to generate it based on your source materials:

  • lists of ideas for activities,
  • lesson outlines,
  • test questions,
  • podcasts,
  • mind maps,
  • reports.

Now you can even generate summaries of your notes not just through text, but also in the form of podcasts and videos.
