{"id":20264,"date":"2026-09-01T15:54:24","date_gmt":"2026-09-01T13:54:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/haimagazine.com\/uncategorized\/is-it-possible-to-teach-ai-without-using-ai\/"},"modified":"2026-09-17T15:41:08","modified_gmt":"2026-09-17T13:41:08","slug":"is-it-possible-to-teach-ai-without-using-ai","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/haimagazine.com\/en\/education-and-science\/is-it-possible-to-teach-ai-without-using-ai\/","title":{"rendered":"\ud83d\udd12 Is it possible to teach AI without using AI?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Since the beginning of the new school year, Norwegian pupils from years 1-7 aren&#8217;t supposed to use AI on their own while doing tasks. In years 8-10, AI tools can be gradually introduced after having prepared the teachers accordingly. In high school, pupils will learn to use it as a preparation for further education and work.<\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You could say Norway is trying to stop new technology from entering through the school doors, but the truth is that their adopted model is based on something else: separating teaching AI from using generative tools independently.<\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Norwegian government isn&#8217;t really assuming kids can be isolated from the algorithm. Recommendation systems are already choosing films for them, suggesting content, classifying search results and recognizing objects in pictures. Any student could be in touch with AI every day even if they never visit any of the popular chatbot platforms.<\/p><h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">First letters, then the chatbot<\/h4><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Norwegian recommendations have been mainly formulated to protect the basic learning process. Kids should first learn how to read, write and count, and later they can receive tools that can carry out part of those activities for them.<\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, this isn&#8217;t an outright ban on using AI tools in younger years. There are certain exceptions, like language teaching and individual support. The Norwegian Ministry of Education has admitted that the right technology can help learning. The problem appears when the tools are used without a clearly defined goal.<\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Young children won&#8217;t always discern whether the chatbot is helping them understand something or just eliminating the obstacle they should handle themselves. The system doesn&#8217;t know the lesson&#8217;s objectives. It doesn&#8217;t know whether it should explain a difficult concept, guide the student towards the solution or give them the full answer.<\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">People should set those boundaries, but you can&#8217;t expect 9-year olds to do it every time they sit down to do their homework.<\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The limited access doesn&#8217;t entail that the school should avoid talking about AI at all in the first years. Actually, it&#8217;s then when they can start preparing children to live in an environment where algorithms will be virtually ubiquitous. But the first lesson doesn&#8217;t have to start from logging in into an app.<\/p><h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">AI is not an app.<\/h4><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Together, the European Commission and the OECD developed a similar approach in terms of AI competencies for primary and middle schools. The aim of their document is to support teachers, directors and teaching program authors to define what skills students will need in a reality that&#8217;s increasingly more shaped by AI.<\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The authors of this framework don&#8217;t reduce AI education to knowing certain programs. According to them, it should include technical knowledge, the ability to assess the system&#8217;s results and a responsible approach towards technology.<\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Students should understand what AI can be used for, how it generates answers and why sometimes it gets it wrong. They should also be able to assess its results instead of just taking the ready-made solutions it offers.<\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The document highlights four areas: contact with AI, creating with AI, managing AI use and influencing on how systems are designed and used. In total, 19 competencies related with knowledge skills and foundations are outlined.<\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The detailed list is long, but we can draw a simple observation from it. Using the tool is just a fraction of AI education. The interfaces, apps and ways to write prompts will change, but the ability to assess answers, recognize limitations and make decisions about technology use will be necessary for much longer.<\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The bottom line is if you can use a chatbot fluently and still ignore how it really works, you can also start AI education without giving students independent control over the tools.<\/p><h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Lesson without logging in<\/h4><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What can these lessons look like?<\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The lessons can start just asking students where they come across algorithms. Why does someone get sports videos on their feed, but other person cute animals? How does the phone know that there&#8217;s a face on a picture? Why two people who write the same query may get different content as a result?<\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There&#8217;s no need to discuss how models are built or trained in detail. In the beginning, it&#8217;s enough to explain that what appears on the screen isn&#8217;t always random or neutral. Systems select content based on date and rules that users don&#8217;t normally perceive.<\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The next lesson can revolve around errors. The teacher shows an AI-generated response and the students try to find inconsistencies, missing information or claims that can&#8217;t be confirmed. The tool is used as a group, without creating separate accounts.<\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Such an exercise shows that fluent language and a resolute tone aren&#8217;t proof of truth. The system can create an answer that looks complete, even if it contains simplifications or made-up information.<\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, the hardest part of education starts before analyzing answers. Students should be able to reflect whether AI can really help them in specific tasks.<\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If the goal is to discover different arguments, the chatbot may point out a point of view that the pupil hadn&#8217;t thought of before. However, if the aim of the exercise is to teach independent argumentation, generating a complete response takes away the core of the work.<\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As you can see, the tool can make it easier to understand a problem, but also block the process that the task was designed for. Context is the main factor that determines which situation we&#8217;re dealing with.<\/p><h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Who&#8217;s supposed to open the door?<\/h4><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Norwegian model has a plan for all stages. Younger students gain basic skills and discover where AI works in their environment. Later on, they can observe how it&#8217;s used and work with it under supervision. Once they&#8217;re prepared to assess responses and understand the consequences of using the tool, they receive personal access.<\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The student&#8217;s preparation isn&#8217;t the only condition, though. In years 8-10, genAI will be taught after preparing teachers accordingly, as they&#8217;re the responsible ones for designing the tasks, defining the tool&#8217;s role and assessing whether using it actually supports learning.<\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Giving access to applications isn&#8217;t equal to AI education, the same way a calculator doesn&#8217;t teach math or a browser doesn&#8217;t develop the ability to check sources. For that to happen, we need tasks, rules and people who can explain why technology is used in certain situations.<\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Keeping AI off the school for as long as possible wouldn&#8217;t be a sensible solution either, since students will still use it outside class, often without the assistance of someone who can point out the errors or limitations.<\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So the Norwegian proposal isn&#8217;t an answer on whether AI should appear at school. It assumes it&#8217;s already part of the students&#8217; world, and it tries to define how to prepare them to use it independently before the tool starts to work for them.<\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to this approach, access to AI isn&#8217;t the beginning of education, but one of its subsequent stages. First, students learn how algorithms work, understand their limitations and assess AI&#8217;s results. Later they start using the tool independently. This is not an attempt to restrict the technology, but to determine when it should fall into students&#8217; hands.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Children should understand artificial intelligence before they start using it for homework.
