How not to fall for the myth of “cheap” AI

Contemporary discourse around artificial intelligence all too often boils down to two extremes: a utopian vision of technology relieving us of effort and dystopian fears of mass job cuts. This topic is central to one of the debates organized as part of the Generative Revolution Day event. It pits two different perspectives against each other: Dr. Inez Okulska, an expert on Agentic AI solutions at UiPath, and Jan Holoubek, an acclaimed film director. This conversation defines the most important dilemma of contemporary operational management.

“Robots perform tasks so that people can lead,” says Inez Okulska. “Automation exists so that you have the time and mental space to focus on what really matters.”

Business realities, however, often dictate entirely different, frequently short-term priorities. Citing the creative industry as an example, Jan Holoubek points to the harsh laws of the market, which readily apply to any sector of the economy geared toward the ruthless optimization of margins.

“AI significantly lowers production costs, and every client who advertises wants their ad to be as cheap as possible, while at the same time spectacular and impressive,” notes the director.

The rest of the article is below the video

Shallow digitization vs. deep transformation

Most companies are still at the stage of superficial technology implementation. From a business perspective, simply using widely available language models is not an operational transformation. The real change in the operating model comes from deploying autonomous algorithms directly into the enterprise architecture.

– We’re not talking about asking artificial intelligence to write your emails or creating average, generic content. We’re talking about automation that operates across enterprise systems, integrating with existing infrastructure – emphasizes Inez Okulska.

At this stage, it also becomes clear that there’s a limit that technology will not cross in the foreseeable future. This is the realm of authentic interactions, trust-building, advanced situational judgment and empathy.

– What eludes technology is the thought that arises in an actor’s mind. What fascinates me most is that when an actor says nothing and does nothing, just looks, then by looking into his eyes I know what he’s thinking – points out Jan Holoubek.

The trap of cutting costs

Bringing this artistic metaphor into market terms: an automated system will process thousands of customer complaints swiftly and flawlessly, but a qualified specialist is essential to handle a difficult negotiation with a key partner or to draw on intuition in a sudden reputational crisis. Focusing exclusively on layoffs is a short-sighted strategy that leads directly to the erosion of institutional knowledge. Replacing experts with standardized algorithms may deliver a spike in quarterly profits, but in the long run it dilutes the company’s unique identity and reduces service quality.

– I hope there will be room for people in the mainstream. But what’s dangerous is that large, powerful corporations may want to move toward ever greater cost-cutting – warns Holoubek.

This raises understandable concerns. However, properly designed and communicated automation doesn’t have to encounter resistance from teams. When employees are relieved of mechanical, repetitive work, they regain the capacity to focus on tasks that deliver real added value to the company.

– The people whose jobs are most transformed by automation are, in fact, its biggest advocates. And not because they fear losing their jobs, but because they can finally perform the duties they were actually hired to do – argues Inez Okulska.

Return to the essence of business

The conclusions drawn from this debate point to the need to change the AI implementation paradigm. First, a thorough audit of the organization’s internal processes should be conducted in order to identify those areas that rely solely on mechanical data entry and transfer. Eliminating bureaucratic burdens is a prerequisite for the organization to unlock the potential of its people.

– Think about the last time you filled out a form, copied data from one system to another, or manually reconciled a spreadsheet. Which of those made you feel alive? – asks Inez Okulska.

Unburdening specialists allows companies to return to their core business principles. In a highly competitive market, value is ultimately created in direct interaction—whether within the team or between the company and the client. Jan Holoubek describes this through the lens of the film industry.

– There will be a return to what is truly the essence of filmmaking. That is, I have a camera, two friends who act, and this fun, this joy will never end – the director predicts.

The culmination of this transformation must be a comprehensive overhaul of training and recruitment policy. Instead of investing capital solely in learning to operate ever more digital tools, budgets should be redirected toward developing strictly cognitive skills: critical thinking, negotiation and adaptive flexibility. The decision about what we optimize with algorithms, and what we deliberately leave in human hands, has become the most important strategic choice today.

As intelligent algorithms advance, businesses face a choice: should artificial intelligence be merely a tool for cutting costs, or an opportunity to unlock human potential?

[888,805
[36
776
post-18088","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-business-2","category-law-and-ethics","difficulty-level-easy
"url2x":"https://haimagazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/Zrzut-ekranu-2025-07-10-o-16.00.36.png
["GET
