Recommendations are displayed on cards with parameters and review summaries, and payment is made in the same conversation window, thanks to its integration with PayPal. Importantly, Perplexity doesn&#8217;t take on the seller role. The stores remain the transaction party: they handle orders, returns and customer contact.<\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/openai.com\/index\/chatgpt-shopping-research\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><mark style=\"background-color:#82D65E\" class=\"has-inline-color has-contrast-color\">OpenAI<\/mark><\/a> has taken a different approach. They&#8217;ve introduced shopping research \u2014 a tool that guides users through the entire process of searching for and comparing products. ChatGPT asks clarifying questions, analyzes reviews, checks specifications and builds a buyer\u2019s guide based on GPT-5 mini, specifically trained for shopping tasks. OpenAI has also announced Instant Checkout, which will allow direct purchases in the chat for merchants integrated with Shopify.<\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For now, the new Perplexity feature is only available in the United States. The OpenAI shopping assistant is available globally for every plan.<\/p><h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Record-breaking AI purchases<\/h4><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/business.adobe.com\/resources\/holiday-shopping-report.html?utm_source=chatgpt.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><mark style=\"background-color:#82D65E\" class=\"has-inline-color has-contrast-color\">Adobe predicts<\/mark><\/a> a 520% surge in AI-driven shopping this season. Clearly, this is due to the base effect, meaning a low reference point, but it&#8217;s a strong sign that chatbots are doing more than just helping users find products \u2014 they&#8217;re actually shaping buying decisions. Both AI giants are riding this wave.<\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Startups creating specialized shopping tools, from fashion to interior design, emphasize that data quality and precision, which general models often fail to replicate, still will prevail in niche markets. But their edge is fragile because in e-commerce, scale is crucial, and today that&#8217;s something only the big players have.<\/p><h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A chatbot economy?<\/h4><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The irruption of OpenAI and Perplexity into e-commerce is way more than just adding a new feature. It&#8217;s an answer to financial pressures and the rising costs of models that still aren&#8217;t pulling in enough revenue. Conversational shopping is becoming a real path for them to monetize at a level that could change the balance sheets of the entire industry.<\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It should be stressed that technology has also matured enough for this change. Models with contextual memory and modules specially trained for shopping tasks can now manage the decision-making process, from question to choice. This convenience is likely to quickly become the standard. However, new risks will appear: information asymmetry, the potential for paid promotion of recommendations, and the question of whether the user sees the &#8220;best&#8221; or the &#8220;best-paid&#8221; options.<\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This approach to sales will likely completely reshape the e-commerce landscape (the biggest players have been gearing up for this for a while). If the decisions to buy start being made within a chat window, the importance of traditional SEO, comparison sites and affiliate programs will diminish. This means harder access to customers and the need to overhaul advertising models. Stores will have to fight not for a position on Google, but for visibility in the AI environment.<\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And here new services emerge, new budgets, a new landscape for marketers and advertising specialists.
