The rollout of the GPT-5.1 update is underway, promising significant changes to how ChatGPT operates. Initially, people on paid plans will experience these new features. This update focuses on two main areas: enhancing the intelligence of the models and improving the quality of interactions. As the creators suggest, AI should not only be smart but also enjoyable to converse with. To achieve this, two updated models are being introduced: GPT-5.1 Instant and GPT-5.1 Thinking.<\/p>

The key change is the enhancement of two main models. The first one, GPT-5.1 Instant<\/strong>, is now designed to be “warmer” and more talkative by default. Instead of just delivering facts, it aims to surprise with a more natural and relaxed form. This is evident in the examples presented by OpenAI: when asked for relaxation techniques, the new model not only lists the methods but does so in a more empathetic and conversational way, grouping them by feelings (e.g., “if your mind feels scattered”), whereas the predecessor used to provide more general time-based categories.<\/p>

Improvements have also been made when it comes to following instructions. With the command “always reply in six words,” GPT-5.1 Instant now sticks to this rule for every subsequent question, whereas the previous version, GPT-5, would lose track after the first response and revert to full sentences. Moreover, this model has gained the adaptive reasoning capability for the first time \u2014 it can “ponder” more challenging questions before answering. This is expected to yield better results in mathematical and programming tests, such as AIME 2025.<\/p>

GPT 5.1 Thinking: Dynamic thinking and clearer communication<\/strong><\/strong><\/h4>

The second model, GPT-5.1 Thinking<\/strong>, is an advanced tool for complex reasoning that’s meant to be more efficient and easier to understand than its predecessor. A key new feature is the dynamic adjustment of the “thinking” time.<\/p>

As the chart shows, the model is designed to spend significantly less time on simpler tasks (up to 57% faster for the 10th percentile of queries), while allowing more time for complex problems (processing times can be up to 71% longer at the 90th percentile of tasks).<\/p>

Responses from GPT-5.1 Thinking are set to be clearer and contain less technical jargon. In an example explaining baseball statistics (BABIP and wRC+), the new model steers clear of raw mathematical formulas in favor of a conceptual explanation, while using a more casual language (“Nerd stat time”).<\/p>

The default tone has also shifted to more empathetic. In response to spilling coffee before a meeting, the 5.1 model focuses on psychological support and a change of perspective (calling it “catastrophizing”), rather than immediately offering practical advice and a packing list, like its predecessor.<\/p>

Customize your chatbot: new styles and settings<\/strong><\/h4>

Easier ways to customize the tone and style of ChatGPT responses are being introduced. New preset options include Professional<\/em>, Candid<\/em>, and Quirky<\/em>. Updates have also been made to the existing ones: Default<\/em>, Friendly<\/em>, and Efficient<\/em>. In the personalization settings, styles like Cynical<\/em> and Nerdy<\/em> are still available too.<\/p>

There’s also a new experimental feature that allows to precisely tune the response traits, such as conciseness, “warmth”, readability (e.g., using bullet points), or emoji use. Interestingly, ChatGPT can proactively suggest updates to these preferences during a conversation if it notices that the person on the other end expects a specific style.<\/p>

A significant update to usability is that changes in personalization and custom instructions now take effect immediately across all chats, including those already in progress. Previously, changes only applied to new conversations.<\/p>

How and when will we use GPT-5.1?<\/strong><\/h4>

The GPT-5.1 Instant and Thinking updates are being rolled out gradually, starting with those on paid plans, and then they’ll make their way to free users. The rollout is spread over several days to keep the platform’s performance stable. Once fully implemented, GPT-5.1 will become the sole default model. For those interested in comparing the changes, previous versions of the GPT-5 models will remain available under the “older models” menu for paid subscribers for three months. Also, the GPT-5 Pro model will soon be updated to GPT-5.1 Pro.<\/p>

New models will also be added to the API: GPT-5.1 Instant as gpt-5.1-chat-latest<\/strong> and GPT-5.1 Thinking as GPT-5.1<\/strong><\/code>. The creators point out that the “.1” in the name reflects significant enhancements while still remaining within the GPT-5 generation.<\/p>
