According to Bloomberg’s findings<\/mark><\/a>, Apple is on the verge of signing a billion-dollar deal with Google, where the new version of Siri will be powered by the Gemini model. The contract is valued at about $1 billion a year. For Apple, this is a technological boost meant to catch up on years of AI delays, while for Google, it’s another step that strengthens its position as a provider of key AI infrastructure.<\/p>

Gemini behind Siri’s mask<\/h4>

The new Siri is set to debut with the next iOS update in spring 2026. At its core will be the custom Gemini model, boasting a massive scale of 1.2 trillion parameters \u2014 almost eight times larger than the current Apple Intelligence models. This engine is designed to handle the assistant’s most complex functions like understanding context, summarizing information, planning tasks and managing multi-stage conversations.<\/p>

Everything is built around a concept Apple calls hybrid intelligence: some processes are performed locally on the user’s device, while only the more demanding tasks are sent to the cloud \u2014 importantly, to Apple’s cloud, not Google\u2019s. So, user data stay within the Cupertino-based company\u2019s ecosystem, within the Private Cloud Compute infrastructure, designed with maximum privacy in mind.<\/p>

Strategic partnership or surrender?<\/h4>

The news of the impending agreement was enough to send the stocks of both companies soaring \u2014 Alphabet by 3.2% and Apple by just under 1%. However, both companies consistently refuse to comment, and Apple is not planning to highlight Google’s involvement in its announcements. Unlike the Safari search engine deal (now worth about $20 billion a year), this time Google is to stay in the background \u2014 with no logos, names or marketing visibility.<\/p>

From the outside, it might look like Apple’s failure, considering it has always boasted about its independence. However, this could be a strategic move, timed just right. Apple sees its collaboration with Google as a temporary fix to help it hang on until its own AI model matures production-wise.<\/p>

For Apple, this is quite an awkward situation. For years, the company has portrayed itself as the creator of “original, better, safe” solutions. Now, it’s turning to a model developed by a competitor, which also powers products for its biggest rival, Samsung. On the other hand, this decision could be the smartest strategic move in years \u2014 instead of stubbornly pushing through with its own research and risking further delays, Apple is buying itself time and the chance to offer users experiences derived from one of the best AI technologies available on the market.<\/p>

For Google, it’s a chance to consolidate the dominance of its AI ecosystem across the global technology supply chain, even while operating “undercover.” Today, Gemini is not just a model but also the foundation of services \u2014 from Android and Chromebooks to cloud servers. Adding Siri into the mix, Google becomes the de facto AI provider for most consumer devices on the market.<\/p>

What does this mean for users?<\/h4>

The new Siri is set to be not only smarter but more personal too \u2014 understanding the context of conversations, remembering past commands, scheduling tasks in the calendar and communicating between apps. In practice, it aims to mimic what ChatGPT-5 or Gemini 2 can already do, yet in a distinctively Apple style: without external branding and with a focus on privacy.<\/p>

Does Apple risk losing part of its essence with this collaboration? Not necessarily. It seems that for the first time in a while, Apple is showing that it can be pragmatic. This could turn out to be a game-changing strategic move at a time when AI is becoming the new operating system.
