JPMorgan Chase and Goldman Sachs, the world&#8217;s two biggest banks, are reshaping their structures by integrating artificial intelligence into every area of their operations. The result? Record-breaking financial performance with almost no change in employment levels.<\/p><p>The latest reports reveal that in the third quarter <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jpmorganchase.com\/content\/dam\/jpmc\/jpmorgan-chase-and-co\/investor-relations\/documents\/quarterly-earnings\/2025\/3rd-quarter\/f24f154c-2653-4da3-b1b0-185586086d50.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><mark style=\"background-color:#82D65E\" class=\"has-inline-color has-contrast-color\">JPMorgan<\/mark><\/a> made a whopping %14.4 billion, up 12% from the previous year. However, the number of employees only increased by 1%. As CFO Jeremy Barnum explains, the bank&#8217;s leadership has been advised to hold off on hiring new staff as JPMorgan implements artificial intelligence across all its units. A few weeks ago, the bank&#8217;s CEO assured that although AI will lead to some job cuts, the company will retrain those affected and the overall number of employees might even grow.<\/p><p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.goldmansachs.com\/pressroom\/press-releases\/current\/pdfs\/2025-q3-results.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><mark style=\"background-color:#82D65E\" class=\"has-inline-color has-contrast-color\">Goldman Sachs<\/mark><\/a> is heading in the same direction, closing the last quarter with a 37% profit increase, reaching $4.1 billion. CEO David Solomon announced a reorganization of the entire company around AI \u2014 from customer service to operational decision-making. In practice, this means less recruitment, selective layoffs and a stronger focus on efficiency. Here too, there&#8217;s a hint of divergence \u2014 the bank\u2019s spokesperson explained that the initial efforts are centered on redesigning processes, and the number of Goldman employees is set to increase later this year.<\/p><h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>We&#8217;re letting go because things are going well&#8230;<\/strong><\/h4><p>Banks estimate that the number of operational and support staff will drop by at least 10% over the next five years, despite the increasing volume of work. Financial institutions are following the path set by Amazon, Microsoft and Google, who are also cutting back on hiring and transferring some tasks entirely to algorithms. Labor market data show that this shift is also affecting service and creative sectors \u2014 from customer service centers to advertising agencies. More and more tasks are being handled by language models and predictive systems.<\/p><p>Companies are not laying off employees because they&#8217;re in a crisis. They&#8217;re doing it because they can operate faster and more affordably. As a result, some positions will disappear, but some workers will be retrained. This means that those who can work with new systems will keep their place in the structure. The rest will need to find a new specialty.<\/p><p>For shareholders, it means productivity is on the rise and costs are falling.
