Comet is a web browser with an integrated sidebar that serves as an AI assistant.<\/strong> It’s designed to analyze the content of the pages in real-time. You can ask questions about the website, request summaries and even delegate tasks related to navigation and content management, including handling the page on your behalf. This mechanism aims to speed up the process of searching for and processing information without having to leave the current page.<\/p>

Limited availability and testing phase<\/strong><\/h4>

Before it was made public, access to Comet was strictly limited.<\/strong> Over the last few months, only subscribers of the Perplexity Max plan could use it. Other interested users had to join the official waiting list or receive a direct invitation from someone who already had access, but each early user had a limited number of invites. According to Perplexity, millions of potential users gathered on the list during this period, which allowed the company to collect feedback.<\/p>

Free access amidst the competition<\/strong><\/h4>

The decision to offer Comet for free is a response to the increasing competition. Perplexity is competing with both established players like Google Chrome and new AI-integrated browser projects, such as Dia by The Browser Company. A similar solution from OpenAI is also expected to be released soon. <\/strong>In this context, Perplexity is aiming to quickly build a user base before the market is dominated by other products.<\/p>

Functionality for different user groups<\/strong><\/h4>

In addition to the basic assistant function, all users get access to a set of extra tools, which include customized recommendations (Discover), project organization (Spaces), a price-comparing shopping assistant (Shopping), a travel information aggregator (Travel), as well as modules for monitoring finances (Finance) and sports results (Sports).<\/p>

Subscribers to the Max paid plan get access to more powerful AI models and premium features. These include an email assistant that automatically crafts responses to match the user’s tone, organizes the inbox, and schedules meetings.
