But now, AI tools are becoming increasingly important.

The opinions within the school community vary. Alongside voices showing enthusiasm for artificial intelligence, there are also skeptical remarks — and these seem to dominate. The discussion is particularly lively because, while AI opens up completely new possibilities for education, it also raises questions about new tasks for teachers and students, and about the future of schools in a world dominated by technology.

Technology as an assistant

AI tools help prepare documentation or plan lessons. They generate tests and control questions, assist in tailoring materials to different difficulty levels, and develop presentations and graphics. Teachers also notice that AI can be used for organizing information, creating summaries or analyzing.

In a nutshell: AI tools enable to work more efficiently and engage students more in classroom activities.

Artificial intelligence in language teaching

Artificial intelligence is used in language learning. But its tools also help prepare interesting and engaging exercises to be used during lessons. A German language teacher says, “I use AI when we discuss a movie and I have to create questions and tasks that relate to it. AI also gives me ideas for warm-up exercises and sends links to short videos that introduce the vocabulary material.”

The more efficient vocabulary learning is an undeniable perk. Artificial intelligence allows to generate flashcards and conduct simulated conversations. Furthermore, it organizes the learning process by creating personalized plans.

Through the eyes of school educators

“Young people often turn to AI when they’re out of ideas or want to improve the style of their expressions,” recalls a high school educator. “Artificial intelligence also inspires, providing solutions that can be used repeatedly.” Another teacher adds: “Thanks to AI, students can review material, which makes learning more efficient. I’ll add that some have laptops, so it’s even more streamlined because they can paste the content of the note and arrange tasks.”

These are just a few of the many benefits of technology that show learning can be faster, more interesting and less stressful, leading to the use of AI in education potentially having a positive impact on youth wellbeing. However, the dangers associated with using artificial intelligence tools can’t be ignored. Educators point out that students often rely on technology, which can lead to a decrease in intrinsic motivation. A limited empathy and a lack of full understanding of emotions by AI are also risks.

You can also hear from teachers that AI might sap students’ creativity, extend the time spent in front of screens, and limit human interaction. The most common fears are that students will submit work written by ChatGPT. And verifying whether assignments were written by AI is definitely harder than we think.

It’s also hard to ignore that the development of AI is causing fear of marginalizing the roles of teachers. If artificial intelligence takes over some of their duties, could it possibly replace them entirely?

In the context of technological concerns among educators, it’s worth citing the findings from the study “Fears and Threats Associated with AI in Education: One Phenomenon, Different Perspectives” (K. Patkowski, M. Zieliński). This study highlights that the most common threats include lack of data privacy protection, algorithmic biases (errors stemming from training models on unreliable data), the risk of reinforcing cultural stereotypes, and the absence of clear ethical standards in using AI in and out of the classroom.

Practical tips for teachers

ChatGPT can be used to prepare scripts for school ceremonies or promotional films. Just describe the concept, purpose and expected effects to get a ready-made outline, and then tailor it to your own needs.

AI can also help in searching for necessary legal records or guidelines from regulations. This speeds up the pace of getting the information we’re interested in and makes it easier to amend the statutes. Don’t forget to ask the chatbot about the source of knowledge.

Artificial intelligence undoubtedly makes it easier to write all kinds of team work reports, too. Just list the completed tasks and you’ll get a document with organized records.

No systemic support

We can’t forget about the formal difficulties either. Schools today simply aren’t prepared to implement AI. Integrating artificial intelligence technology would involve financial burdens that many institutions can’t afford. Moreover, there are no trainings or practical guidelines for teachers. In such a situation, it’s hard to maintain calmness and openness. Some are taking matters into their own hands — reading articles, participating in webinars, and testing through trial and error. Others, however, repeat that they already have so many duties that they don’t need more innovations.

Is the future all about AI?

Despite differing attitudes towards AI, the educational community mostly agrees on one thing — without training and proper institutional support, AI will remain something unknown and frightening. The future of technology in education largely depends on whether schools will get the tools, and their staff — the knowledge to use these tools effectively. Clear procedures and enhancing the digital skills of the educational staff seem crucial to reduce fears and leverage the potential of AI as a teaching assistant.

In today’s discussions on education, you can’t ignore the topic of artificial intelligence.

[797,820,863,800
955

36
860
post-14274","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-ai-in-industries","category-ai-in-practice","category-education-and-science","category-topic-of-the-month","tag-ai-threats","difficulty-level-easy
https://secure.gravatar.com/avatar/710515f698ca5d66836d810e169474f496a7aa2be7219746d2c7b82f1aca12db?s=96&d=mm&r=g
Jestem polonistką z pasją do nowych technologii, liderką projektów, która z powodzeniem łączy humanistyczną wrażliwość z cyfrowym podejściem.
