The first instalment of $10 billion will be paid after the final agreement is signed.<\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;Everything starts with compute,&#8221; said Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI. &#8220;Compute infrastructure will be the basis for the economy of the future, and we will utilize what we&#8217;re building with Nvidia to both create new AI breakthroughs and empower people and businesses with them at scale.&#8221;<\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The 10 GW scale corresponds to the energy needs of over 8 million households in the USA. This demonstrates the pace of &#8220;AI factories&#8221; expansion and the demand for Nvidia&#8217;s systems in training frontier models. Nvidia benefits from this by securing long-term demand for its platforms, while OpenAI gains predictable access to computing power, which is crucial for the development of ChatGPT and subsequent generations of models.<\/p><h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Greater independence and further development<\/h4><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">OpenAI is also developing its own system in collaboration with Broadcom and TSMC. The plan includes finalizing the project and preparing for production deployment in 2026. This is part of a strategy to diversify power sources and reduce long-term costs. <mark style=\"background-color:#82D65E\" class=\"has-inline-color has-contrast-color\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/nvidia-invest-100-billion-openai-2025-09-22\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Reuters<\/a><\/mark> emphasizes that the agreement with Nvidia doesn&#8217;t change these plans. When it comes to cloud infrastructure, OpenAI is concurrently developing the Stargate project (with Oracle, among others) and announced in July an additional 4.5 GW of data center capacity in the US. The new arrangement with Nvidia complements this path: it involves financing, hardware and the energy needed to scale services.<\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The funding from the chip manufacturer also fits into the broader improvement of relations between OpenAI and Microsoft. Recently, both parties entered into a non-binding agreement that paves the way for transforming OpenAI into a profit-oriented company and renegotiating the terms for using infrastructure and revenue sharing.
