That could be a reality at 60% of companies

According to the Capgemini Research Institute (“Harnessing the value of AI: Unlocking scalable advantage”), 88% of companies increased their spending on GenAI by an average of 9% last year. On average, 12% of the IT budget is now exclusively reserved for this category, while 61% of companies declare they’ll continue to increase their investments.

The report shows a fivefold increase in the adoption of GenAI over two years (from 6% in 2023 to 30% of companies scaling solutions today), with nearly 6 out of 10 organizations planning for AI to become an active team member within the next 12 months, including as a supervisor for other AI systems.

Telecommunications, consumer goods, aviation and defense have advanced the furthest. In terms of applications, customer service, marketing, risk management and IT are taking the lead. These are the areas where it’s easiest to “monetize” the effects of GenAI, as it directly improves response times, enhances brand perception by customers, achieves more accurate segmentation, and speeds up incident resolution.

Reorganization and cost monitoring

The report also highlights the challenges faced by companies that approach AI implementation ambitiously. More than half of the organizations have experienced “bill shocks” — unexpected, sharp increases in cloud costs as they scale their workloads. As a result, there’s a growing interest in smaller, cheaper models (SLM) and architectures focused on cost efficiency.

“Enterprise adoption of AI is scaling faster than almost any technology we’ve seen before, with companies experimenting with AI across all functions. But rapid adoption doesn’t necessarily translate into large-scale deployment with tangible ROI,” said Franck Greverie, chief technology and portfolio officer, head of global business lines and board member of the Capgemini group. “To succeed, enterprises must set up a solid data foundation, in a trusted environment that’s compliant, secure and ensures necessary privacy. This, along with a new operating model with a balanced human-AI chemistry, can ensure winning business outcomes.”

Development and uncertainty

According to Capgemini, AI agents are no longer just a novelty. What’s more, nearly 45% of organizations are testing or implementing multi-agent systems — a natural step towards task orchestration and autonomy. At the same time, 38% of decision-makers expect that within 3-5 years, agents will become self-learning and will require minimal supervision.

Another issue is trust, which is still limited — 71% of organizations don’t fully trust autonomous agents in business applications, and only 46% have written AI management policies, which are rarely adhered to.

The Capgemini Research Institute conducted this global survey last May among 1100 people at the director level or higher from companies with annual revenues of at least 1 billion USD. The sample covered 11 sectors and 15 countries in North America, Europe and Asia-Pacific, and the respondents represented different business functions.

Almost 6 out of 10 companies plan to “hire” AI as an active team member within a year.
