OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has announced a set of changes designed to significantly alter the way ChatGPT communicates with individuals under the age of 18. He declares that the safety of teenagers is a priority. The company is no longer just a technology provider. Now, it acts as a digital guardian that can recognize threats and intervene if necessary.<\/p>
The rules cover two areas particularly vulnerable to abuse: intimate relationships and mental health crises. ChatGPT will not engage in flirting with underage users. New mechanisms are also in place to block the creation of narratives or scenarios involving health or life loss. When the system detects serious warning signals, it can inform a caregiver \u2014 and in extreme cases, emergency services, such as the police.<\/p>
These changes are a response to specific events. OpenAI is facing a lawsuit after the death of Adam Raine, who had spent months conversing with the chatbot. Meanwhile, hearings regarding the harmfulness of AI chatbots are ongoing in the US Senate. Reuters has revealed internal company documents indicating that they may have neglected safeguards against sexual interactions with minors. Meta has already responded by updating its policies. OpenAI is also rising to the challenge.<\/p>
OpenAI is introducing the “blackout hours” feature, which allows to block access to ChatGPT temporarily. Parents will decide when the system should be blocked, e.g., at night, in school or during dinner. This is a response to the most common question from guardians: “can I turn it off?”. Now, you can. However, the most crucial mechanism is linking a child’s account to an adult’s account. Then, the system will recognize that it’s dealing with a minor and activate all the safeguards. It might send an alert if the conversation begins to resemble a threatening situation. However, OpenAI admits that it’s not always possible to clearly determine the user’s age. Therefore, in case of doubt, the system will choose safety over anything else and enforce the rules intended for minors. Whoever wants control will have to activate it.<\/p>
