Hassabis criticizes comparing AI to a person with a PhD primarily for two reasons. First, such a solution <\/strong>must operate consistently at the same high level:<\/strong> it can’t ace one test brilliantly and then make trivial mistakes in another, as is currently the case. Second, the way a question is posed should not determine the outcome \u2014 today’s LLMs are susceptible to “magic phrases” and hallucinate, making them impressive tools, but not so reliable. That’s why Hassabis calls the label “PhD intelligences” nonsense.<\/em><\/p>

As explained in the discussion in the All-in podcast<\/a>, yes, AI does have abilities similar to a doctor in selected areas, but it still lacks coherence, intuition and creativity. A PhD is a journey, ethos and years of struggle, not just a sum of correct answers \u2013 he notes.<\/p>

Let’s not repeat mistakes<\/h4>

Hassabis doesn’t downplay the capabilities of artificial intelligence \u2014 on the contrary, he emphasizes their unprecedented scale. At the Athens Innovation Summit, which took place last weekend, he said that artificial general intelligence (AGI) could be a ten times bigger and faster shock than the industrial revolution. It’s a vision of a hundred years of changes packed into a decade: an abundance of resources, breakthroughs in medicine, nuclear fusion energy, new materials and technologies that sounded like science fiction not long ago.<\/p>

However, a serious warning appears alongside this promise. Hassabis reminds us that AI cannot repeat the mistakes of social media, where the initial slogan “bringing people together” quickly turned into polarization, addiction and a mental health crisis.
