Claude becomes a virtual assistant who doesn’t just answer questions but acts on your behalf, performing tedious tasks in the background.

A new assistant that sees what you see

Claude for Chrome has access to the active page view — it can read its content, recognize buttons, text fields and forms, and then perform actions based on your instructions. This tool is designed with daily automation in mind — it can automatically fill out online documents, transfer data between tabs, manage your Google Calendar, search your Gmail inbox or copy data from a report to a spreadsheet. You can assign it specific tasks, like “transcribe data from this email to a form” or “set up a meeting for tomorrow.” This approach allows you to automate repetitive tasks, making Claude an assistant that knows where to click, what to highlight and how to simplify your day.

Tests for a chosen few

For now, Claude for Chrome is available only to selected users — 1,000 Max plan users — as part of a limited research preview. Test participants install the extension from the Chrome Web Store, log in with their Claude account, and can send prompts that are executed directly in the browser. This is a deliberate experiment aimed at assessing not just usability, but mainly security. Even in autonomous mode, numerous restrictions have been implemented, such as the need to confirm sensitive actions, thematic blocks (e.g., finance, adult content) and advanced classifiers that recognize suspicious instructions. Participants can’t use the tool on high-risk sites (like banks or medical services), and each action is preceded by a risk assessment. Anthropic collects data about the effectiveness of security measures and AI behaviors in an authentic environment to improve their systems and make the tool available to a wider group in the future.

Safety first

The environment in which Claude for Chrome operates is vulnerable to prompt injection attacks. To prevent these, Anthropic conducted a series of tests which successfully reduced the effectiveness of these attacks from 23.6% to 11.2% after implementing protective layers. Claude also relies on system prompts — a set of overarching instructions that dictate how it responds to sensitive data and dangerous commands. Additionally, in tests with hidden form fields, new security measures decreased the success rate of attacks from 35.7% to 0%. Importantly, Claude never operates entirely autonomously — users can limit its scope in real time, and system prompts block attempts at publishing, purchasing or sharing data without explicit consent.

Is the browser the new home for AI?

Claude for Chrome is the next step in Anthropic’s strategy to integrate AI with everyday work tools. Previous updates included integration with Google Workspace, Slack, Canva and others. Now, Claude gains the ability to operate directly in the browser, taking into account the context of the web page. This careful, phased implementation of a new way of interaction has the potential to streamline daily work, but still needs refinement and robust security.

How many times have you found yourself manually copying data between tabs, transcribing information from one form to another or endlessly switching between apps?
