But convenience and increasing accessibility come at a price. After all, it’s no secret that if something is free, it’s probably at the expense of our data.

This text explains how to use AI wisely. For instance, so you don’t lose data, money or the joy of traveling while on holidays.

All-inclusive AI

There’s a good chance you’ll ask AI at least once before your trip about the best beaches nearby, tour routes through the old town or eateries with the best food in town. According to OpenAI data, ChatGPT has become the fastest-growing consumer app in history, so it’s no surprise it’s also used for vacation planning. In response, Google is heavily developing Gemini, which combines data from the search engine, maps, Gmail (think: bookings, tickets) and crafts a travel plan in seconds.

Where’s the risk hiding?

The first key risk is us, or more precisely the complete trust we sometimes place in technology. Then there’s the lack of cross-verification of information which, combined with AI hallucinations, can lead us to non-existent attractions.

Fun fact: go ahead and start up any popular model (ChatGPT, Claude or another) and ask it to pick a number between 1 and 23. You’ll find that all of them pick 17. Try to dig deeper and find out why exactly 17. You’ll learn a lot about the directive to please the interlocutor! Additionally, remember that AI doesn’t always have local context, such as bank holidays, strikes or temporary closures of attractions you’re promising to take your kids to. Do AI model creators legally answer for such recommendations? No.

The second risk is obviously related to our privacy. When you write to a chatbot (especially one that operates in a small environment) “I’m flying on July 12th on the LO535 flight to Budapest, my hotel is the Al Habtoor Palace Budapest”, that’s a set of information that’s like a birthday present for a criminal. AI models aren’t a magical black box — queries are logged (leaving a trace on the provider’s side), analyzed and can fall into the wrong hands. They might even have been set up by those very hands and “accidentally” suggested to you.

The third threat is deepfakes and false promotions. Photos or videos advertising beautiful resorts, “last minute” offers that… don’t exist. If something looks too good to be true, it probably isn’t. Of course, creating and using such deepfakes to mislead is a violation of many regulations — starting from consumer law (misleading about the characteristics of a product/service), through laws against unfair competition, up to criminal law (if it leads to fraud, for example). Platforms hosting such content also bear responsibility under the Digital Services Act, which can include financial penalties reaching up to 6% of global annual turnover. If a deepfake uses the image of real people without their consent (like a hotel owner “borrowed” from an Instagram tourist), it also constitutes a violation of personal rights and GDPR (which also involves financial and civil liability).

The last of the risks is quite mundane. Namely, if we all start relying on AI in this matter, we’ll likely all end up in the same places.

How to use AI safely during holidays and beyond?

Don’t give AI assistants too much personal data: flight numbers, passports, personal IDs, or hotel locations. If a chatbot on a hotel site asks you for them, don’t hesitate to ask for the basics — the legal and business reasons.

Verify travel plans or recommendations — check AI hints on maps, websites or with local operators. Simply put: make sure the museum you’re heading to is actually open by checking directly at the source.

Avoid promotions that look too good to be true. Check the hotel’s website, the operator, the company in the registry. If you see it’s a fake, feel free to report the suspicious site.

Use trusted apps, and if you can, turn off model training on your data. If you’re entering your companions’ data into the hotel’s AI concierge, let them know about it.

What does the law say about it?

Here we reach my favorite part, since lawyers don’t get vacations. What regulations define the rules for safe use or provision of holiday tools?

GDPR requires data minimization and informing the user about how their data is processed. If an app asks for more data than it needs, that should be a warning sign for us. Additionally, personal data of others that you input into AI also remain your responsibility. Spot a data scam? You can file a complaint with the Data Protection Authority.

AI Act — although most holiday apps don’t fall into the “high risk” category, EU law requires transparency and risk assessment. Basically, the system can’t mislead you or act unethically. You have the right to know that you’re speaking to an AI.

Digital Services Act — platforms that offer the so-called intermediary services (like accommodation marketplaces or tour apps) are required to quickly remove reported illegal content (like fake offers or deepfake ads for non-existent hotels), have clear terms of use and content moderation mechanisms, ensure ad transparency (users must know it’s an ad and who’s paying for it), and manage systemic risks such as AI-driven content or offer recommendations. Failing to meet these requirements could lead to fines up to 6% of global turnover, the obligation to implement corrective measures, and in extreme cases, the possibility of temporary suspension from the EU market.

Consumer Law — under this law, consumers are protected from being misled or having important information hidden (like unclear details about the seller or the real location of the property), unfair trade practices (like artificially generated reviews, fake “last items” or “super deals”). If you’ve fallen victim to such actions, remember that you have the right to withdraw from the contract, even if it wasn’t made under your local law.

Unfair Commercial Practices Directive. If someone creates or promotes AI-generated holiday deals that mislead customers about the service’s characteristics (like hotel quality or location), dishonestly copies someone else’s content, uses artificially created images or reviews, then they risk their actions being considered an act of unfair competition. This, in turn, is a straightforward path to a lawsuit to stop such activities, an obligation to compensate for damages, the publication of an apology or a verdict at the violator’s expense.

Summing up

AI on holidays is like a GPS — it’s great if you treat it as a tool, not the sole and infallible source of information. That’s why:

Feel free to use it, but verify the results

Protect data — yours and others’. You also can also decide what happens with information about you

Leave room for adventure and authentic encounters.

Holidays are, at least in theory, a time to relax from work, daily rush, and for some, from technology too.
