In my previous article<\/mark><\/a>, I discussed the dark side of the success of generative artificial intelligence, namely the use of artists’ work to train models without proper consent or compensation. AI enthusiasts keep arguing that this technology will unlock entirely new depths of human creativity. It will inspire artists and creators to experiment with different forms of expression. It will streamline and enhance the efficiency of creative processes, and also enable the discovery of previously unknown perspectives by transcending the boundaries of traditional creation methods. However, its impact on the job market in the creative industry is a completely different kettle of fish.<\/p>

In the publication “Generative AI: winners and losers. Early evidence of shifts in freelancer demand”<\/mark><\/a> (January 2025), we can read that there’s already a noticeable decrease in job market listings. On the other hand, the size of budgets allocated by employers for contracts hasn’t changed significantly. This suggests that companies are still investing in creative services, but in a different way: individual assignments, which are priced much higher, focus on more complex tasks that often require human-AI collaboration.<\/p>

One of these tasks might be searching for variables (commonly referred to as digging) that allow to achieve different styles when creating graphics in MidJourney.<\/strong><\/p>

Olga Volosin<\/mark><\/a>, a designer from Moldova (currently living in Malaga), tells us about the role of AI in the creative process, and most importantly, what a style miner does:<\/p>

Seweryn Jakubiec: Olga, could you tell me what you do for a living?<\/strong><\/p>

Olga Volosin:<\/strong> I’m a graphic designer with 8 years of experience, specializing in branding and social media content design. For the past two years, I’ve also been involved in generative art. I can say my journey with it started quite by accident. I just saw such works on LinkedIn and it sparked my curiosity. Working with AI has allowed me to visualize ideas and concepts in a way I couldn’t imagine before, which has significantly enriched my professional portfolio. It’s an exciting and inspiring journey, full of creativity and discoveries.<\/p>

SJ: What were your impressions during your first experiences with generative artificial intelligence?<\/strong><\/p>

OV:<\/strong> My first experiences were full of challenges. I saw huge creative potential, but I also quickly encountered serious issues, such as “artifacts”\u2014strange, unwanted details that appeared in the images. These included unusual textures, blurred spots, or even extra fingers. Nowadays, it’s increasingly easier to avoid these errors. I’ve spent a lot of time developing the right prompts and searching for strong styles. I’m still learning and derive quite a bit of satisfaction from the direction AI is heading towards.<\/p>

SJ: How did you come up with the idea to become a MidJourney style miner and turn it into a business?<\/strong><\/p>

OV:<\/strong> It all started from my passion for exploring generative art. Experimenting with different styles in MidJourney made me realize the potential of one attribute, –SREF, used for creating both cohesive and unique visualizations at the same time. Over time, people began asking me how they can obtain the images I showcase. That’s why I started sharing tips, and eventually, it turned into a business. I help others realize a specific vision while simultaneously pushing the boundaries of AI art.<\/p>

SJ: What does your creative process look like? How long does it take to unearth a –SREF, especially one that you want to share with others?<\/strong><\/p>

OV:<\/strong> Work begins by defining the style I want to create. Then, I experiment with different prompts, parameters and references until I achieve a consistent and unique look. After refining the results, I test the –SREF code on different prompts to ensure it’s versatile. The time needed to extract a good –SREF can vary greatly. Sometimes I get a satisfactory result in a few hours, sometimes it takes several days of work. When I find something truly unique, I make sure that this uniqueness is paired with quality. The most exciting part is watching others use the styles I’ve prepared in their own creative projects!<\/p>

SJ: In what other aspects of your work are generative AI tools particularly useful, and where do you rely more on your own skills and creativity?<\/strong><\/p>

OV:<\/strong> Generative AI is incredibly useful for discovering new styles, quickly iterating ideas and achieving consistent aesthetics with tools like –SREF. However, it’s still personal skills and creativity that play the leading role in this work. This includes working on the prompt, choosing a stylistic direction and seeking unique artistic accents. AI is a powerful tool, but when it comes to vision and storytelling, it cannot replace human creativity one to one. It’s important to maintain a balance between using technology and relying on personal artistic intuition.<\/p>

SJ. What other AI tools do you use at work?<\/strong><\/p>

OV:<\/strong> I most often use MidJourney. There’s no more powerful tool right now for creating unique styles and extracting –SREF codes. Other AI programs help me with specific tasks:<\/p>

– Adobe Firefly<\/strong> \u2013 it’s perfect for product design, helping with visualization and refining concepts.– Hailuo AI<\/strong> \u2013 it excels in creating short films and adding motion to static visualizations.– Kling<\/strong> \u2013 it brings my images to life, turning static works into dynamic animations.– Magnific<\/strong> \u2013 it upscales images and enhances details, while preserving artistic quality.<\/p>

SJ: I discovered your work on LinkedIn myself. How do you see this platform?<\/strong><\/p>

OV:<\/strong> In my opinion, it’s a great platform that allows you to make professional connections, share the results of your own work and build communities around the art you create. It’s also a place where you can attract potential clients or collaborators.<\/p>

Olga shares the results of her work for free on her LinkedIn profile<\/mark><\/a> (here you can purchase a few collections<\/a><\/mark> with complete examples). Generative AI is getting better at understanding user prompts, so over time, knowing how to configure tools might not be as necessary. However, it’s definitely a great example of a side hustle: small projects or tasks that, thanks to AI, allow for additional earnings or even a steady passive income.<\/p>

Using ready-made –SREF attributes offers many benefits. Instead of wasting time, money and energy persuading AI to follow a specific styling direction, you can choose from a catalog of existing ones and focus on refining the final effect. For me, browsing through such different and atmospheric examples is very inspiring. Especially since Olga provides sample prompts for all the shots. This is particularly useful when I’m looking for something specific that I find hard to describe myself. The diagram below is just a glimpse of what possibilities MidJourney offers\u2014the catalog of attributes and commands<\/mark><\/a> is much larger.<\/p>

The concept of miner is already well-known in the tech world. In blockchain, their role involves verifying and approving transactions on the network, as well as creating new blocks. A miner uses the computational power of their equipment to solve complex mathematical problems that are part of this process. For their efforts, miners receive rewards in the form of cryptocurrency. The most famous one, Bitcoin, still has about 1 million left to be mined (as of March 2025). Why do I mention this?<\/p>

There’s an interesting LinkedIn post<\/mark> <\/a>by Saber Tili<\/strong>, where he explains that the chance of 2 miners finding the same attribute combination is 1 to 4,294,967,295. To illustrate it better, if 1000 miners extracted only 3 –SREFs daily, mining them all would take them 3,9 million years. This shows that if the style market keeps on developing at a steady pace, Olga will still be able to share her passion for a long time. AI tools for image generation possess many features that require learning. This topic was covered in our magazine by Joanna Neuman<\/mark><\/a> and Jeremiasz Krok<\/mark><\/a>. Despite the increasing ease in creating generative art, it seems many people (and companies) will still place their trust in professionals, especially if they have very specific expectations regarding the end result.<\/p>

I personally approach the topic of the creative revolution with more caution. After all, from the perspective of human history, the success of artists was backed by hard work, unique talent and style, incomparable creativity, and above all\u2014limited resources (time or money). Will the democratization of access to endless generative ideas make humanity flourish artistically, while clearly preserving the value of art as such? I am not convinced. If art is everywhere, will it still be art?<\/p>
