But they can show it—sometimes with behavior, sometimes with… voice. Scientists have spent years trying to understand what the different sounds made by animals mean. Artificial intelligence finally came to their aid. The latest study, conducted by an international team of scientists from the University of Copenhagen has shown that AI can recognize emotions hidden in the sounds of as many as seven different hoofed animal species.

How does AI recognize emotions?

Our bodies reveal what we feel. Our heartbeat, breathing and voice change. The same happens with animals. Their voice becomes higher or lower, the sounds they produce are shorter or longer, quieter or louder. Sometimes in a way imperceptible to the human ear. However, AI won’t miss a thing.XGBoost algorithm analyzed thousands of animal vocalization recordings, searching for repeatable features that could indicate specific emotions. And it found it them! Sounds of joy or peace are usually shorter, more subdued, with fewer high tones. On the other hand, when an animal feels stressed, its vocalization becomes longer, more “tremulous” and full of tension.

What’s all this for?

Discovering common “emotional signals” across different species is more than just a curiosity. This is a step towards better understanding animals and their needs, and consequently, looking after their welfare. If AI can identify when an animal is stressed, we can respond more quickly — improve breeding conditions, identify problems before they lead to disease. This also represents hope for new tools for farmers, veterinarians and animal caretakers.

What about interspecies emotions?

An interesting fact is that some features of sounds that indicate specific emotions are common across many species. What does it mean? It’s likely that there’s a “universal language of emotions”—at least for those expressed through voice. AI performs best at recognizing emotions in pigs. Goats or Przewalski’s horses are more “mysterious”; their voices are harder to decipher. But we are only at the beginning of the journey. This is the first study of its kind that has included so many different species at once. Until now, AI had typically studied one species. Now we know that it’s possible to create a tool that recognizes the emotions of many different animals.

What’s next?

To turn AI into a true “translator” of animal emotions, more data is needed. Recordings from a larger number of species, in different situations. Maybe in the future, all it will take is an app on your phone that, after a pig’s grunt or a cow’s moo, will say: “Stressed”, “Happy”, “Hungry”. We just have to wait.

Neighing, bleating, grunting—just ordinary sounds or encoded emotions?
