I practically don’t use hard cash, I pay for everything – as you can easily guess – with my phone. However, when spring peeks through the window and the market stall tempts with fruits, I have to handle it differently. That’s when BLIK (our Venmo) comes in handy! I just need one code to withdraw cash without even having a card. Problem solved.

On the way back, I pick up another package – from a parcel locker, of course, which I can open remotely from the app. These aren’t miracles, just ordinary everyday stuff. But once you cross the border, especially heading west, one has to proudly admit that these are miracles indeed. Ours, Polish.

The Western – although mainly American – dream still attracts us. After all, decades of hopes imprinted in the Polish soul cannot be erased so easily. Especially when new, even better solutions keep coming to us from across the ocean, and the media sigh over billions of dollars invested in AI development.

But let’s not forget that the States, even if they’re supposedly United, are actually a country of contrasts. There’s the famous Silicon Valley, but there are also whole areas without phone signal, understanding, or even awareness of modern technologies.

At the turn of the year, on behalf of the Human+AI Institute (the scientific branch of CampusAI), we conducted a comprehensive survey on a representative group of the Polish population and three Western countries – Spain, Great Britain, and the USA. We wanted to evaluate the level of adaptation to generative artificial intelligence, which is a new technology. We started by exploring the awareness about the famous ChatGPT, then we looked into knowledge about more advanced tools and skill levels, frequency, motivations, and reasons for their use, up to learning paths and development plans for the future.

Unexpectedly, Poland turned out to be the leader in many aspects! First of all, the largest percentage, as high as 64% of the population, already occasionally uses AI generative tools, such as chatbots. In the USA, this percentage is 51% – in the UK, 48%. We also have the smallest percentage of undecided people – those who have heard of generative artificial intelligence but haven’t used it yet – only 33%, compared to 44% in the United States and 49% in the United Kingdom.

Moreover, we have a very good distribution of users across different age groups. Sure, young people are leading the way among tech enthusiasts, but Polish seniors are surprisingly active, even those over 75 years old! In Great Britain and Spain, ChatGPT is used every day or a few times a week only by population under 45. Older people do this occasionally. In the United States, that boundary shifts by a decade – to the age of 55. However, it’s still a larger generation gap than the one we can observe in Poland.

Out of the surveyed countries, the highest percentage – up to 58% – of Polish respondents also express interest in exploring the secrets of generative AI in the future. Even if they admit that gaining knowledge in this field isn’t easy. More people also assume that they will resort to AI tools even more often in their personal life. Around every third respondent also thinks that AI will help us increasingly more at work. This view is actually shared by respondents from all the surveyed countries.

A rapid development. A little over two years ago, on November 30, 2022, the premiere of the first publicly available generative artificial intelligence tool – ChatGPT – took place. For the first time, anyone could use AI, you just had to use natural language. Suddenly we didn’t need to program or possess any secret technical knowledge – a simple chat was more than enough. This seemingly simple, yet revolutionary change made a big impact worldwide. And this is how the new human + AI era began, where technology and human creativity shape the future together.

Two and a half years later we already know that this has translated into a real increase in our possibilities. Since then, a lot has happened in the fields of education, implementations, discoveries, and social initiatives that really impact our lives. It seems like generative AI can’t be ignored anymore. It’s present almost everywhere and accompanies you practically every day. But we didn’t know how much our societies had actually adapted to this revolutionary technology and how this process was really going in different countries. And this question was the starting point for the first research project of the Human+AI Institute.

The study lasted for a few weeks, with almost two thousand respondents participating in it, divided into groups representative of the given country in terms of age, gender, and education. Additionally, we interviewed over 500 additional people from the AI community in Poland – people who represent not so much the entire population of the country, but a subgroup of AI enthusiasts, and for example actively follow events dedicated entirely to this topic. For instance, we took a closer look at participants of last year’s Generative Revolution Day edition or members of the CampusAI community. Besides the degree of familiarity or the frequency of use, we were also interested in the difference between using AI in personal and professional life. We asked about its impact on our lives, openness to learning, investments, as well as concerns and beliefs related to the future, ethics, and job market in the context of AI. In this case, the survey was longer – it also included open questions and allowed for a deeper exploration of users’ adaptation to specific technologies, getting to know their perspective and feelings.

One of the more interesting takeaways from the research results on this group is that respondents often declare that using generative AI tools (like ChatGPT, Google Gemini, or Copilot, as well as applications supporting writing, document analysis, time and project management, customer service, etc.) consciously allows you to save one whole workday on average weekly!

???

Let’s see how exploring generative AI really looks like! However, you can still see a limited number of seniors regularly using ChatGPT.

Spain presents a completely unique, interesting pattern – although the frequent use of ChatGPT is not unfamiliar to younger or older users (above 55 years old), there is a noticeable gap in the 45-55 age group, so among people who entered the job market in the 90s or at the turn of the century and are still professionally active.

Poland presents itself as the most inclusive country – both those who use ChatGPT occasionally and those who can’t tear themselves away from it represent all age groups.

Levels of proficiency: breakdown by gender (in Poland)

The gender gap in terms of AI skills in Poland persists at all levels of education and, interestingly, it deepens with education.

Levels of proficiency: breakdown by age (in Poland)

In Poland, there is a clear age gap in using AI tools.
